David Moreno Obituary, EDINBURG, TEXAS — A 16-year-old driver has been taken into custody following a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of bicyclist David Moreno, 43, early Friday morning in Edinburg, according to the Edinburg Police Department.
Authorities said the juvenile driver is facing a charge of collision involving personal injury or death, a second-degree felony under Texas law. Because the suspect is a juvenile, police have not released the driver’s identity.
Investigators said officers responded at approximately 1:00 a.m. to the 2000 block of North McColl Road after receiving reports of a crash involving a bicyclist. A preliminary investigation determined that Moreno was riding his bicycle southbound in the center turn lane when he was struck from behind by a vehicle.
Police said the driver involved in the crash failed to stop and left the scene, leaving Moreno with fatal injuries. Authorities later identified the suspect vehicle as a 2014 Dodge Caravan during the investigation.
Several hours after the collision, around 5:00 a.m., the parents of four 16-year-olds arrived at the Edinburg Police Department and provided information related to the crash. Police confirmed that four juveniles were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident, and detectives later identified the juvenile driver and took the individual into custody.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the involvement of the other three juveniles who were inside the vehicle or whether more charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
The Edinburg Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash and is asking anyone with information to contact investigators at (956) 289-7700 or Edinburg Crime Stoppers at (956) 383-8477.
